In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in Israel by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has expressed his support for Israel's right to defend itself.[0] Stoltenberg acknowledged the suffering and loss of innocent civilian lives that Israel has endured and emphasized the importance of proportionate responses to these attacks. He also called for measures to be taken to prevent further loss of civilian lives as the conflict continues.[1]

During a meeting of allied defense ministers in Brussels, Stoltenberg stated that NATO allies have the capability to address the situation in the Middle East and several of them have provided support, including intelligence, to Israel.[2] He emphasized that Israel does not stand alone and condemned the terrorist attacks in the strongest possible terms.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also addressed the defense ministers via video conference, sharing graphic footage of the atrocities committed by Hamas.[3] He referred to Hamas as the “ISIS of Gaza” and called for the release of all hostages and the protection of civilians.

The NATO alliance expressed its solidarity with Israel and recognized its right to defend itself against these acts of terror. It called for Hamas to immediately release all hostages and for the fullest possible protection of civilians. The alliance also emphasized that no nation or organization should seek to take advantage of the situation or escalate the conflict.[4]

Stoltenberg highlighted the importance of protecting civilians and adhering to the rules of war, including proportionality.[5] He stated that any nation or organization hostile to Israel should not try to exploit the situation.[6] He noted that the United States has increased its military presence in the region to send a clear message of deterrence and prevent further escalation of the conflict.[6]

Greece, another NATO ally, expressed its solidarity with Israel and called for a clear position from all member states within the alliance. The Greek defense minister emphasized that Hamas' attack violated the core principles of NATO, including human rights, human dignity, and security.[7] He urged all member countries to express a clear and unwavering stance on the matter.[7]

In response to the attacks, Israel has launched a bombing campaign against Hamas, aiming to eliminate the terrorist organization and protect its citizens. While Israel is committed to targeting terrorists rather than civilians, the conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life and displacement of people in Gaza.

The international community, including NATO, has called for Israel to respond with proportionality and ensure the protection of civilians. The focus is on preventing further loss of innocent lives and finding a resolution to the conflict that respects the rights and security of all parties involved.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties to engage in dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution. The NATO alliance stands united in condemning terrorism and supporting the right of nations to defend themselves, but it also emphasizes the need to protect innocent civilians and adhere to the principles of proportionality and respect for human rights.
