In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza, there are reports that US President Joe Biden may soon visit Israel.[0] This visit would be part of the US diplomatic push in the region, following Secretary of State Antony Blinken's meetings with Arab leaders.[0] The conflict has resulted in a high number of casualties, with thousands of Palestinians killed and wounded, and one million people displaced.

Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip have caused significant destruction and loss of life. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that 2,670 Palestinians have been killed and 9,600 wounded.[1] The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees also states that one million people have been displaced.[2] The health ministry further reveals that in the past 24 hours alone, 324 Palestinians have been killed and 1,000 others wounded in Israeli air raids.

In response to the violence, Israel has ordered the evacuation of the northern part of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military has warned about 1.1 million people to evacuate within 24 hours, as they anticipate a ground assault aimed at eradicating Hamas. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have already fled their homes, joining the over 400,000 who had already been internally displaced due to the hostilities.[3]

The situation in Gaza has raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis unfolding there. Egypt has agreed to open its borders to allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, starting from Monday. Additionally, Palestinians with foreign passports are now permitted to cross Gaza's southern border with Egypt to fly out from Cairo to their final destinations.[4] The US is confident that Egypt will open its border with Gaza to allow crucial humanitarian aid to be delivered.

President Biden's appointment of a special envoy for Middle East humanitarian issues, David Satterfield, highlights the seriousness of the crisis in Gaza.[2] Satterfield will be responsible for responding to the ongoing turmoil and coordinating efforts to address the urgent needs of the affected population.

Despite Israeli announcements about safe areas in the Gaza Strip, the reality is that the entire territory, including the south, is exposed to bombardment.[5] This has led to a dire situation for those trapped in Gaza, particularly the wounded, sick, disabled, and medical staff. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is calling for safe zones to be maintained in the north and for regular ceasefires.[6] They also advocate for allowing those who wish to flee to do so through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.[6]

The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life, with over 1,900 Palestinians and 1,300 Israelis killed. The number of fatalities is expected to rise as families struggle to recover the bodies of their loved ones.[7] The United Nations has expressed concern about the worsening situation in Gaza, stating that the noose around the civilian population is tightening.[8] The UN has condemned Israel's order for the mass evacuation of Palestinians in the north of the Gaza Strip, calling it impossible and warning of devastating humanitarian consequences.

As the crisis in Gaza continues, there is an urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the conflict. The international community must work together to address the immediate needs of the affected population and find a path towards lasting peace in the region.
